France’s overseas departments and collectivities also share land borders with Brazil and Suriname, and the Netherlands Antilles. France is linked to the United Kingdom by the Channel Tunnel, which passes underneath the English Channel.

The preferable time is July-August since that is the tourist season. Valbonne is a beautiful medieval village on the French Riviera, just a few miles in from the French coast. The village proper is a walled town and it’s not possible to take cars in, but there is ample parking on the edge of the town and it’s a short walk in.

French food and wines are the most well known in the world. The French are passionate about their food and extremely knowledgeable when it comes to specialties of different regions. For instance, there are more than three hundred and fifty different varieties of cheeses. Some are hard, some soft; some are flavored with herbs, nuts, or peppercorns. The world’s favorite French cheese is Camembert, which originated in the small town of Camembert in Normandy. Cow’s milk curd is left to set for a day, and then is salted and sprayed with a bacterium, forming the white bloom on the surface of the cheese and encouraging the cheese to ripen.

They are eaten raw or broiled and served with a cream sauce. The traditional seafood platter includes oysters, clams, mussels, crawfish, crabs, shrimps, and periwinkles. They are boiled and eaten with lemons and a shallot and vinegar sauce. American style fast foods have now invaded France, and many young people prefer to have a burger and fries rather than a traditional French meal. North African kebabs are also appearing in many of the larger towns.

Special purchases include lace, crystal glass, cheeses, coffee and, of course, wines, spirits and liqueurs. Arques, the home of Crystal D’Arques, is situated between St Omer and Calais. Lille, the main town of French Flanders, is known for its textiles, particularly fine lace. Most towns have fruit and vegetable markets on Saturday. Hypermarkets, enormous supermarkets that sell everything from foodstuffs and clothes to electrical equipment and furniture, are widespread in France. There are several antique centers where genuine antique furniture and other objects are on sale. Amongst the larger department stores in Paris are the Printemps and the Galeries Lafayette near the Opéra; the Bazar Hôtel de Ville and the Samaritaine on the Right Bank; and the Bon Marché on the Left Bank.
